You're right to ask
This category has earned your skepticism. Here are straight, plain-language answers. Not sure where to start? The two-minute quiz points you to your jar.
The product
What exactly is The One Jar?
It is a whipped balm made from five ingredients: 100% grass-fed beef tallow, UMF-rated Manuka honey, cold-pressed jojoba oil, non-GMO vitamin E, and an optional natural scent. We whip it fresh in small numbered batches so it goes on light and sinks in fast. It is a rich, comforting moisturiser for dry, mature-feeling skin, nothing more complicated than that.
Why beef tallow on my skin?
Tallow's fatty-acid profile closely resembles the oils your own skin makes, which is why it tends to feel at home rather than sitting on top. People used it for generations before lab-made creams arrived. We pair it with Manuka honey, which is naturally humectant, so the blend cushions and softens skin that feels dry.
Will it make me smell like beef?
No. Properly rendered, fresh tallow has almost no scent. The beefy smell people mention comes from cheap or oxidised tallow. Our Unscented jar has a faint, natural note that fades within minutes of applying. The Lavender and Citrus jars simply smell like lavender and sweet orange.
Is it greasy?
This is exactly why we whip it. Dense tallow balms can take 10 minutes or more to absorb. Whipped tallow spreads thinner and sinks in within about 3 to 5 minutes. Two tips: apply to slightly damp skin, and use less than you think you need. A pea-sized scoop covers the whole face and neck.
Will it break me out?
Honest answer: every skin is different and we will not pretend otherwise. Tallow is a rich balm and most people tolerate it well, but if your skin congests easily, patch test on your inner arm, start with a thin layer a few nights a week, and build up slowly. If it does not suit you, the 100-day guarantee has you covered, and you keep the jar.
Does it actually do anything, or is it just hype?
It is a moisturiser, and that is exactly how we talk about it. It is made to soften and comfort skin that feels dry, tight or flaky, and to help it feel more supple. We do not claim it erases wrinkles, treats any skin condition or replaces medical advice, because no balm can, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. The real test is your own skin over a few weeks.
What does "whipped" actually mean?
Most tallow balms are poured solid, which is why they can feel dense and waxy. We whisk ours with air in small batches until it has a soft, mousse-like texture. That lets it spread thin, melt in on contact and absorb faster, so a little covers a lot.
Which scent should I choose?
Unscented for purists, sensitive skin, kids and anyone who wants zero fragrance. Lavender for a calm, herbal end to the evening. Citrus for a bright, zesty morning. The 2 and 3-jar bundles let you pick a different scent for each jar.
Skin type and suitability
What skin types is it for?
It is made with dry, very dry and mature-feeling skin in mind, the kind that feels tight by mid-afternoon or flakes in winter. It also suits normal skin that simply wants lasting moisture. If your skin is very oily or congests easily, introduce it slowly and see how you go.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Many people with easily upset skin reach for the Unscented jar because the list is short and has no synthetic fragrance. As with anything new, patch test on your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using it more widely. If you have a known allergy to beef, honey or any listed ingredient, this is not the product for you.
Can I use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
The ingredients are simple and food-grade in origin, and many expecting customers choose the Unscented jar. We are not able to give medical advice, so if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please check with your doctor or midwife before adding anything new, and choose Unscented to keep it fragrance-free.
Can children and babies use it?
Yes, many families share one jar across the household. For babies and young children, choose Unscented and patch test first. As with any cosmetic, it is not intended to treat any skin condition.
Can I use it around my eyes or on my lips?
It is gentle enough for the skin around the eyes. Use a small amount and avoid getting it directly in the eye. It works on lips too, though our Tallow and Manuka Lip Balm is shaped for that job and comes free with the 2 and 3-jar bundles.
Can I use it with my other skincare and under makeup?
Yes. Apply it as your last step, after any water-based serums, to seal in moisture. Give it 3 to 5 minutes to absorb and makeup sits over the top without pilling. If you use prescription treatments, apply those first and follow your clinician's guidance.
Ingredients, sourcing and ethics
What is in it, exactly?
Five ingredients, all listed on every product page: grass-fed beef tallow, UMF-rated Manuka honey, cold-pressed jojoba oil, non-GMO vitamin E, and, in the scented jars, a touch of natural lavender or sweet orange oil. The Unscented jar leaves the last one out. That is the whole formula.
How do I know this isn't another white-label balm?
Fair question. There is a wave of jars out there that are mostly water and mineral oil. Ours is different in a way you can check yourself: the full five-ingredient list is on every page, the tallow is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, and the Manuka honey is UMF-rated from New Zealand, whipped fresh in small numbered batches.
Is the Manuka honey real?
Yes. It is UMF-rated, the independent grading standard for genuine New Zealand Manuka, and the same honey goes into every batch we whip.
Where does the tallow come from, and is it ethical?
Our tallow comes from cattle that are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished. It is rendered from fat that would otherwise be discarded, so it makes full use of the animal in the nose-to-tail tradition rather than being raised for cosmetics.
Is it vegan?
No. Tallow is rendered beef fat and honey comes from bees, so the product is not vegan or vegetarian. We would rather be upfront than dress it up as something it is not.
Do you test on animals?
No, we do not test our products on animals.
Are there seed oils or synthetic preservatives in it?
The formula is built on tallow, Manuka honey and jojoba, with vitamin E to keep it fresh. Because there is no water in it, it does not need synthetic preservatives to stay stable.
Using and storing it
How do I use it?
Warm a pea-sized amount between clean fingertips, then press it into slightly damp skin on the face and neck. Use it morning, evening or both. Less is more, so if it ever feels heavy, you have used a little too much.
How long does a jar last?
Used twice daily on face and neck, most customers get 2 to 3 months from one 113 g / 4 oz jar. A little goes a long way, so per use it works out cheaper than most drugstore moisturisers.
How should I store it, and does it expire?
Keep it cool, out of direct sunlight, with the lid on. Thanks to the vitamin E, an unopened jar stays good for around 12 months, and once opened we suggest using it within about 6 months for best freshness. The texture is natural, so it may soften in summer and firm up in winter, which is completely normal.
Will it melt in hot weather or in transit?
Whipped tallow can soften if it gets warm on its way to you, especially in summer. If your jar arrives looking flatter than expected, it is still perfectly good. Pop it in the fridge for an hour to firm up and it returns to its usual texture.
